A light shining in the darkness. Isn’t that what we’re called to be?
Matthew 5: 14, 15 says, “You are the light of the world – like a city on a mountain, glowing in the night for all to see. Don’t hide your light under a basket; instead put it on a stand and let it shine for all.” (NLT)
One night two weeks ago, I rounded a bend in the road and happened upon a field of hundreds of twinkling lights, I was instantly reminded of this scripture. Nothing like a field of hundreds of lightning bugs…glowing in the night for all to see…or at least for all to see who were driving on that road…to illustrate my point.
One lightning bug blinking just doesn’t have the same effect as hundreds. I know I sometimes feel like a solitary lightning bug…flying around trying to let my light shine for all to see…not feeling like I’m making any impact or difference. But…oh… the impact that hundreds of blinking lightning bugs make. Just like all of us working together to let our lights shine. All of us working together can light up with Jesus more of the darkness of this world. Just like hundreds of lightning bugs lit up more of the darkness for me that evening.
Reminds me of a song:
This little light of mine
I’m gonna let it shine…
Let it shine…let it shine…let it shine…
And yes…I even know what makes a lightning bug light up.
Kristofer made a lightning bug puppet…and his bottom lights up…and “Larry” loves to share with his friends about his glowing bottom.
I had to do my research.
Me, Larry and the lightning bugs lighting up the dark,
