We live in a quiet neighborhood with wide streets, lots of trees and very little traffic. And did I mention the kids…lots of kids. I came upon about a dozen of my little neighbors riding their bikes as I was riding my bike one evening this last summer. As I wove in and out of the little bikers, with my hands poised on the brakes, I overheard some of their conversations. “Do you know your right and left?” “Show me.” Of course, they were talking about right and left hands…but it got me to thinking.
Show me. Show me what’s right and what’s not…show me what needs to be left behind. I was reminded once again of the responsibility we have to show and teach the children that we minister to what is right and what needs to be left behind.
My neighborhood is where I get the inspiration for the “By the Backyard Fence” stories. It’s where I walk and bike and talk to God. It’s where I listen and observe His creation. It’s where He gives me the ideas and the words to write. There is no way I could ever do it on my own. I can’t do this life on my own either. Neither can these children. We all need guidance and direction…I know that as a child of God, I need God to “show me.” Show me what’s right and what needs to be left behind.
As I ponder the next adventures for our characters… I pray that the stories will flow with a message of what is right and true and the characters will show children what God’s love is all about.
Do YOU know what’s right and what needs to be left behind in your life?
A child at heart,
